VIFF 2020 | "Udine" Is An Appropriately Bewitching Tale

Creatures of the water can come in many forms. In Undine, she comes in the form of a museum tour guide. Undine opens at the tail end of a relationship between its titular character and her lover, who is initiating the breakup before her shift. But in quick succession after the fateful conversation, Undine (Paula Beer) has a unique encounter with Christoph (Franz Rogowski, A Hidden Life) and the two quickly fall in love with each other. The love story that ensues is potent and compelling, primarily because of the chemistry between Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski, who both starred together in Transit from 2018. It’s not a complex premise here, but Undine is tactfully and artistically put together in a way that remains alluring from start to finish. Like some creatures of the water can be, Undine is an entrancing experience.
