VIFF 2020 | "Chained" Works With An Interesting Concept And A Great Cast

Maybe you were taught growing up that violence isn’t the answer. Despite being a smart 13 year old who likes growing plants and taking care of things, Taylor finds that violence gives him power over people - or so he thinks. This realization causes the plot of Chained to take some drastic twists, and the result is a captivating story that’s not perfect, but is fascinating to watch.
In Chained, Taylor happens upon something unexpected in an abandoned warehouse: one dead man and another chained to a post. While most would immediately call the authorities, Taylor sees this as a special opportunity; an opportunity to take care of a person who he thinks needs him. Taylor leaves the man chained up, bringing him food, water, and entertainment while trying to manage his daily life, his romantic interest in his female best friend, and his complicated relationship with his dad. Taylor must now make a series of decisions between what’s right and what he wants, and as you’d expect from a 13 year old, he doesn’t always choose wisely.

Among some of the highlights include casting, with Adrian Holms and Aleks Paunovic being excellent supporting actors playing Taylor’s dad and detainee respectively. Paunovic, particularly, is especially convincing in keeping audiences guessing whether he’s a friend or foe. And of course, a great performance from young actor Marlon Kazadi, who portrays the clever and curious protagonist in a captivating way as the story unfolds. Smooth cinematography and good pacing makes Chained easy to watch and keeps the film engaging.
The third act unfortunately seems to trip up over conveying a clear message for the story, with perhaps too many components of the plot to resolve. But while I would’ve preferred a much clearer and more concise finale, Chained still ends on a satisfying note, and overall proves to be a worthwhile experience.
With plenty of ways the story can play out, watching through Chained is an entertaining endeavor. The title might refer to physical shackles, but this is a story you might find yourself hooked on.
