If cultural relevance is to play a role in a films quality how is it Vice (66% RT 57% AUD) beats out a film like Crazy, Rich Asians (91% RT 77% AUD)? In a recent phone conversation with my ForReel colleague he noted that the academy has a tight inner circle that leans towards certain films, actors/actresses, and directors.
The other wildcard here is Hurricane Florence slamming into the east coast this weekend and while the studios aren't projecting a loss it's hard to believe that folks who are being evacuated will be stopping by a theater anytime soon
The Nun spooked audiences to the tune of $53 million this weekend easily beating out perennial August winner Crazy Rich Asians. The second new release Peppermintperformed within expectations earning a modest $13.2 million.
Crazy, Rich Asians continues to impress. A week after suffering a mere 6% drop week to week the Asian led film fell just 11% over the 3 day start to Labor Day Weekend.
Neither Kin or Operation Finale are being projected for more than $10 million on 4 and 6 day totals respectively. Labor Day Weekend is looking to be a dud at the end of an impressive August at the box office.
The drop of 5.7% according to Box Office Mojo would place the film in the top 30 since 1982. If you remove Christmas week releases - it cracks the top 10.
The vast majority of projections have Happytime Murders ranging anywhere from $13-15 million, with some high end estimates putting it up to $20 million
While its midweek release netted the film $34 million - its three day total sits at $25.2 million just ahead of the Meg and its $21.1 million three day haul.
Crazy Rich Asians is the real wildcard - strong pre-sales and a mid week release (close to $6 million Wednesday) has it looking to sneak just ahead of the Meg.
